There are so many environmental issues in our world but one that stands out to me is the risk of extinction of Coral reefs. I found an article from ScienceDaily that gave me a lot of insight and information on this topic. Coral reefs have one of the most productive ecosystems compared to other living beings. Recent studies have surfaced the reproductive habits and patterns of Coral reefs over different time periods and have concluded the spawning synchrony has completely changed. Lack of synchrony reduces the chances of the fertilization process being successful. In order for Coral reefs to have a proper synchronicity everything in the environment must be aligned including “sea temperature, solar irradiance, wind, the phase of the moon and the time of sunset”. Because of these environmental factors the synchrony process has become erratic and less and less Coral polyps are popping up each year causing a great decline in the species of Coral. Scientists have recently started visiting the same Coral plots once a year and are documenting the quick changes they are seeing.  Coral is a very flowered plant so does not seem as if the population is diminishing but we are losing great amounts very quickly. This issue is important to me because I have always been very interested in ocean life and have always thought the plant is beautiful. My dad really enjoys scuba diving and so my parents decided to name me Coral. The ocean is at a rate to increase in temperature by 0.31 degrees Celsius per decade due to pollution which is creating another major problem for coral, we need to start being more aware of our actions as humans and the drastic effects is has on other living species.
